DESCRIPTION: My aim when making this particular piece of art was to use two different mediums in order to produce a third medium unachievable by any other means. I initially started off by using black ink and a paintbrush on large white sketch paper. Once I had come up with a design I liked, I then scanned the painting into my computer. I brought the image into Photoshop and began painting the color into the image with a digital paintbrush. My desire was to create an image that felt both organic and yet also modern and illustrative.

I have always been fascinated with old school Asian Art and the whimsical nature that it reveals. That type of art reminds me of John Lennon’s music. Its very simple and airy like the 3 chords commonly used in John’s music. There is a great deal of space left between the sounds, which reminds me of the free and airy spaces left between Asian calligraphy strokes. The depth comes through without any effort, and the movements of the ink strokes resemble a ballerina type gracefulness. I wanted to achieve this same feeling but through the combination of 2 mediums in order to produce an original take on an older concept and art style.
